MISSION OF ICBS:
To improve blood safety in developing countries by achieving affordable and quality assured blood screening, establishing quality systems, providing requisite training and coordinating technology transfer.
ICBS' activities complement national and international efforts in the area of blood safety, thus contributing to the elimination of the disparity between the industrialized and the developing world.
RATIONALE:

  • 80% of the world's population live in developing countries but utilize only 20% of the world's blood supply.

  • Blood safety in the developing world is grossly inadequate

  • WHO estimates that 4 million units per year are not tested for HBV and HIV.

  • Far more are not tested for HCV.

  • Paid/replacement donors predominate.
